Acid Mothers Temple SWR with Pikachu from Afurirampo...
...made sweet love to my soul last night. SWR is the free jazz version of Acid Mothers. If you aren't aware of some of their performance lineups, you can read up on them here. But basically Acid Mothers revolves around Kawabata Makoto, the guitarist with frizzy hair. And Pikachu was fantastic, as expected.
Saxophonist Umezu Kazutoki was a guest musician. Drummer is from very influential band called Ruins. Kawabata Makoto is a genuine baddass.
This is Pikachu. One half of Afurirampo. They are all involved in so many projects. I've seen both of them in various side-projects, but never seen them together. It's a shame. They were actually playing another show last night with Bogulta and Oshiri Penpenz. Also, Pikachu's MOM came to the show, which made me really really happy.
I bought a tape recorder to start documenting Japan and Japanese music in particular. I'm going to use a lot of the recordings for research or my senior thesis. I ended up interviewing Kawabata Makoto, which really surprised me. He talks about music, politics, drugs, Osaka, etc. You can listen to it here: Kawabata Makoto Interview Here's short part 2, about Namba Bears (the venue) founder Yamamoto Seichi (of Boredoms fame). Kawabata Makoto Part2 I should apologize if I sound like a tool. I started speaking in Japanese and forgot to go back to English. That happens to me all the time in this country.
With ENVY http://www.temporaryresidence.com/mp3s/envy_gomadandmark.mp3 I tried to see this band three years ago when they played at Fuck Yah Fest in LA but things got complicated. now that wait is over. thank GOD. I wonder what attracts me to Envy's brand of hardcore over all the other stuff I scoff at. I think it's that underneath the screaming high school angst are some unbelievably beautiful guitar parts. Unbelievable beauty :)
Event is at Shangra-Li in Osaka-Umeda on January 29th.
