so i dont know why i am blogging about this since it probably interests nobody...
but anyways today i was digging through my stuff back home and found some mysterious blank cd's, one of them which said "Virus" on them. All of a sudden my mind had one of those flashbacks you see in the movies, and I suddenly realized these are my oldest electronic recording I have. I remembered I was trying to be clever by calling the album "Virus" so that nobody would download it off the internet (yes, stupid I know).
Anyways I think I'm probably the only person in the world who has heard these tracks, and they pretty much consist of nine 30-second songs I made on Fruity Loops sometime between 7th and 9th grade.
Please enjoy it. I got some new equipment for my new project... A toy piano and a Korg Nano pad control surface which works well for making drum samples crazy. also getting my kaoss pad back together from music store tomorrow. i loved that thing.
New Fitness album, In The Mirror. Post-Disco from our retro-future. More Fitness to come soon. The workout album and an EP are on their way, not to mention more B-sides. Mixtape series is also coming, be prepared.
Last night I went to see both these bands, as well as another opener called
Johnny and the Moon (yet another wolf parade side project, this time going for the indie/folk genre)
Anyways, Beach House was pretty much amazing, Victoria Legrand's vocals have this deep and sweet whispery quality that is hard to describe,
its pretty much the best voice i've heard live in a long time. All this backed up with layers of drum-machines, guitar, organ, synths and live drums that
make the whole experience slow 60's pop shoegaze orgasm. Plus they wear super east-coast hipster outfits that really pissed off the two guys standing behind me.
At first i was kind of annoyed too, but once they started playing i was in such joy that I started to find Victoria's enormous WWE belt buckle and Alex's
vest and creepstache ironic and charming (by the end of the performance Victoria started shyly performing wrestling moves as a joke).
THE WALKMEN... well one thing that really annoyed me was the way that Hamilton, the lead singer, thrusted his hips forward into my face whenever he
started yelling loudly into the mic (his fly was halfway open too). That said, he kind of sounds like bob dylan or elvis, but he screams loud as !@#$% -
just like that. Which is impressive and enjoyable. What is also enjoyable is when they play their guitars loud like that too. At times there is a little too
much straightforward pounding of barchords that is a little unoriginal and boring. But most of it was good. I like that they played that one song that appeared
in the volkswagen commercial, "we've been had"... i dont necessarily like car commercials, but thats still a damn good song.
Acid Mothers Temple SWR with Pikachu from Afurirampo...
...made sweet love to my soul last night. SWR is the free jazz version of Acid Mothers. If you aren't aware of some of their performance lineups, you can read up on them here. But basically Acid Mothers revolves around Kawabata Makoto, the guitarist with frizzy hair. And Pikachu was fantastic, as expected.
Saxophonist Umezu Kazutoki was a guest musician. Drummer is from very influential band called Ruins. Kawabata Makoto is a genuine baddass.
This is Pikachu. One half of Afurirampo. They are all involved in so many projects. I've seen both of them in various side-projects, but never seen them together. It's a shame. They were actually playing another show last night with Bogulta and Oshiri Penpenz. Also, Pikachu's MOM came to the show, which made me really really happy.
I bought a tape recorder to start documenting Japan and Japanese music in particular. I'm going to use a lot of the recordings for research or my senior thesis. I ended up interviewing Kawabata Makoto, which really surprised me. He talks about music, politics, drugs, Osaka, etc. You can listen to it here: Kawabata Makoto Interview Here's short part 2, about Namba Bears (the venue) founder Yamamoto Seichi (of Boredoms fame). Kawabata Makoto Part2 I should apologize if I sound like a tool. I started speaking in Japanese and forgot to go back to English. That happens to me all the time in this country.
This is super rough, first time through stuff. But I made some MP3s for some artwork/networking purposes. So I decided I'd post it on over here. Oh also I am changing my name to Magical Mistakes. at least for this release. And the first word in the song is 'passion' but I was rendering this real fast so I didn't bother moving the wave form far over enough to enough the P sound. Heh
I made this is an 8-bit rendition of a classic tango song sung by carlos gardel, "adios muchachos", which means something like "goodbye boys" in English.
Maybe Mselasco come out with an album called " Super Nintango" featuring nothing but 8-bit video gamey tangos. but most likely not.
With ENVY http://www.temporaryresidence.com/mp3s/envy_gomadandmark.mp3 I tried to see this band three years ago when they played at Fuck Yah Fest in LA but things got complicated. now that wait is over. thank GOD. I wonder what attracts me to Envy's brand of hardcore over all the other stuff I scoff at. I think it's that underneath the screaming high school angst are some unbelievably beautiful guitar parts. Unbelievable beauty :)
Event is at Shangra-Li in Osaka-Umeda on January 29th.
Also, New Years with JohnElectric and Jalepeno of Gay Sunshine.
I DJed with them for a little bit, super fun. Hopefully JohnElectric will send me recordings of some of the mix to post here, but until then check out Colotronic for hip news from the Denver crowd.
Also to celebrate the coming of 2009, Rainbow Destroyer Blog will be starting a new Mixtape series. Coming very, very soon. Rainbow Destroyer friends Thumbkin will be kicking off our first mix. Be excited.
Here is this... it is a little silly but, I think you all will find it enjoyable. We should make one for everybody. I have a bunch of additional footage of just people talking and such. Maybe we should all collect and later compile footage so the movie-making minded people in our group can create something beautiful. The quality on this is shit because i rendered it for the interweb. No excuse for the poor editing however. Someone told me once that the revolution will not be televised, but it will be well documented
