In this last weekend, some of us brave rainbow destroyers traveled to the desert with a stove made out of beer-cans and pre-fab indian food. The destination was the Eureka Dunes in Death Valley, California, which are famous for the amazingly loud roar they make when you slide down their slopes. In addition to our triumphant ascent to the "toppest" dune, we managed to conjure up this analogy for you. Metal=Porn.
Why?, you ask....
The aggressive, frustrated, and self-gratifying quality of metal music, what some would call musical masturbation, is where I derive this analogy. Getting pleasure out of the shred guitar licks on the new children of bodom cd is arguably the same as getting pleasure out of watching free porn on the internet.
Not convinced? We also found this parallel.
In pop-culture, only a few metal bands are considered "okay" to talk about in common conversation (i.e. Metallica and Black Sabbath). Similarly, the porn industry has only a hand full of stars that have made there way into pop-culture status (let's say Pamela Anderson and Anna Nicole Smith for sake of my analogy). Pamela Anderson is most remembered (arguably) for her work in Baywatch, a softcore porn disguised as a TV drama. Although not porn it self, it hints and makes suggestions towards what porn is. Only a few minor adjustments and you would get what we would call porn. Black Sabbath, by today's standards, is not what one would call a metal band. However, they started it all with their down tuned guitars and dark nihilistic aesthetic. Today's metal is a faster, cruder, less refined derivative of this initial form. Like Pamela Anderson, Black Sabbath exists as the soft-core version to which one could derive something more vulgar.
Metallica used to be credible. Now, they are a parody of themselves and exist as the only mainstream "metal" band. Similarly, you could say Anna Nicole Smith was an actual porn-star that later became a pop-icon. No longer did she fully participate in her previous role, but her connection to it never left the public's consciousness.
This all said ... Math Rock=Nude Art if Metal=Porn
SPECIAL GUEST LIVE:DOSH(from ANTICON,US) / ROM(from Wimm Recordings ,US) GUEST LIVE:JUN TAKAYAMA a.k.a. SPEEDOMETER / SHINGO SUZUKI(origami PRODUCTIONS) DJ:dj拓馬 (MO'WAVE/aftermath)/ DJ KYOHEY(LOW) / DJ TATSUYA(night crusing)/ EGNOS(WISEGUYS) Show was at Metro in Kyoto. Squished in between ground level and subway level at a train station. A beautiful place indeed. This was the best night so far but I was pretty drunk so any good stories are a bit too difficult to articulate without sounding like some nostalgic cunt. So i'll refrain and just put a few pictures.
Although I will note that Rom is a pretty awesome considering their relative obscurity. And one of them, Roberto aka Epstein, tours with Savath and Savalas aka Prefuse-73. And Dosh was pure beauty and perfection.
I'm currently digging up poetry from anarchist argentine periodicalsfrom the 1920's and 30's, translating them, and compiling them into an anthology. here's one that i've been working on...
Concept
In one instant I said: war is [necessary The power of the sword I would [grasp All thirst for vengeance is ignoble [and precarious, But only with the blood of others will my blood be washed.
I was excited with the sound of the fierce [bugle call And like Joan of Arc I felt possessed. By the gesture of a utopian fatherland [that in crines Trumpets and drums know it summarized I glimpsed suddenly at cities [ravaged by war; mothers that shake their shadows [cramped. Sister and bride in pure anguish [lay siege… Blood of our spirit, oh! [human thought] Double-edged blade, your fist will hold More noble swords than those of this [tragedy: The triumphant idea of the beast, Enceladus.
I'm not gonna have a good introductory narrative to tell this story. I'm just going to put it out there. When I saw Nagisa ni Te yesterday night, it was only the guy (Shibayama) and his bassist friend. His girlfriend/drummer/vocalist wasn't playing. I have no idea why. He didn't offer any explanation either. So from the start I was already a bit devastated. I watched the show in a bittersweet drunken stupor. But I'll continue with my story: Shibayama, the male vocalist guitar god in Nagisa ni Te, is just that--he's fucking incredible. You can catch hints of the raging psychedellia couped up within this man on their records, but the live setting really showcases the great range of guitar delay/distortion/noise freakouts juxtaposed with delicate vocal arrangements. I should also note that Shibayama does a great job at playing the tortured artist, but in a particularly Japanese way. He's this aging musician, probably in his mid-40s but he's got this perfect look on his face, like an older guy reflecting on how bittersweet and lonely his life has been. It felt like this emotion carried him away so much that he had trouble playing the songs at times. Like he definitely just fucked one song up and stopped playing, panting and out of breath and said "gomennasai" like five times while staring at the ground with this timeless eye-glimmer half-smile half-suicidal break down. It was absolutely beautiful.
... So Nagisa ni Te is playing at Namba Bears (a live house run by ex-boredoms) on November 7. I'm going to go to that. Maybe girlfriend/drummer Takeda will be there. God I hope so.
Other music I saw last night... let's see: 三輪二郎といまから山のぼり/ぱぱぼっくす/ 前野健太とDAVIDBOWIEたち/OA~さんましめそば
三輪二郎といまから山のぼり: "MIWA JIRO and from now we climb the mountain..." (basically that's the translation). I bought his CD. He's nice. He played an acoustic set by himself but on record plays with drums, bass and chinese violin. Will post a separate post on this guy once I get through his album.
ぱぱぼっくす: Girl and guy 前野健太とDAVIDBOWIEたち: This guy sang a great song about "anata ga koibito ni naritai" (i want you to be my lover) but it had enough soul to it so i got him to give me a free CD sampler with that song on it.

post-rock post drunk etc.
Superroots 9- Boredoms. pretty nutty the new mogwai record- i think it's better than happy songs. i realized i've been away from most sources of music criticism for the better part of the last 3 months or so and i can't tell you how much better i feel as a person. until today, when, in my slightly drunk haste i decided to read some album reviews, which quickly spawned into a neurotic search to find some validation of my own ideas about music because--god forbid, some dude in a magazine might disagree with my own profound observations on music. so yah, be warned. the internet is great for so many countless reasons, but is also a cesspool where too many people can share their own shitty opinions... and i am writing this on a blog.
This is Yagi. Yagi is an artist and also the boyfriend of my friend Satsuki. She didn't tell me any of this though so I slowly discover that Yagi travels around Europe doing art shows with his instructor, who is this Japanese guy who apparently (if I can understand Japanese correctly) was influential to Jackson Pollock. Or he's like the Japanese Jackson Pollock. Something to do with Jackson Pollock basically. More info on this later. He got back from the Ukraine last week doing a show there. Crazy performance/visual art installations where the art is in the act of making the art. Stuff like that. And lots of stuff made with yarn that looks like canvas. I'll follow up soon with some tangible info that you can read and see and digest and enjoy and LOVE. I've really got to get some more details about all of this but it's quite interesting the people I've been running into around Osaka/Kobe/Kansai area.
