Really awesome unknown French music
I met one of these guys at Pitzer who was visiting his french exchange friend last semester. He makes incredible pop psychedelic music. It's incredible. Phenomenal. Perfect. Sexual. And I'm absolutely serious.
Tomas Feya: Click this link. It'll blow your mind. And then. A friend of his (tomas') got in touch with me and likewise, he makes phenomenal and strange electronic music.

Why The Eagles Suck
So, Jackson Browne wrote the first verse of the song "Take It Easy". These Lyrics read:
"Well, I am running down the road/ Trying to loosen my load / I've got seven women on my mind / Four that want to own me, two that want to stone me, one because she is a friend of mine/ Take it Easy" So, basically... Jackson Browne is just trying to get away from assorted complications in his life and wants to just "Take it easy". Respectable.
Now... insert the Eagles. Glenn Frey added the next verse which reads: " Well, I am standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona/ and such a fine sight to see/ its a girl, my lord, in a flat bed ford/ slowing down to take a look at me/ but come on baby/ don't say maybe/ I've got to know if your sweet lovin' is going to save me.
So, first off...what kind of jackass writes songs about how girls check him out. That is just a little douche-y to me. Next, after he claims how some babe is checking him out he goes into all this sensitive bullshit about how he has to know if her love is going to save him. What the Fuck? Who sees someone in a truck and immediately starts questioning their ability to save them with the power of love? In addition to being bullshit, it totally does not go with the original plan of taking it easy. We are trying to get away from all the complex and bullshit connections that tie us to the women in our life, not prematurely involve ourselves in some. My conclusion: The Eagles suck
fuck buttons.... fuck
Never have swells of electronic noise moved me so much as the
Fuck Buttons album Street Horrrsing. They're from Bristol and they look pretty young. Their songs aren't complex and they aren't technically demanding to any degree, but they've developed an aesthetic that rivals Young Team (note: they're touring with Mogwai right now too), Boris' drone, and World's End Girlfriend (when he's noisy at least). The songs are a pretty simple formula: ambient noise goes to loud noise goes to screaming distorted vocals goes to loud noise goes to ambient noise goes to next song. Then repeat for six songs. Add an occasional drum beat, sometimes four on the floor, sometimes Animal Collective through distortion pedals, and that is basically their album. With these "seminal debut albums" by post-rock bands (whatever that means anymore, I'll get to that later), it doesn't really matter if the songs are formulaic, repetitive, or adolescent. It really comes down to the sense of immediacy. It's urgent.
Also, did you know that seminal is derived from the root semen? Because these are the albums that lead to the subsequent development of a new aesthetic or movement. They are the root of creation.

Fitness makes me want to work on my abs
Well, Fitness was born from his mother's womb. He was born in Boulder, I think. If that's not true than I am taking artistic license, because I want to construct a narrative. So here it goes: a narrative about Fitness.
He listened to too much Kraftwerk, too much krautrock (maybe) and then he got into Stereolab. His obsession with Stereolab hasn't faded, but I tend to identify his music (fitness) with Kraftwerk. It's very motoric. His newest album is all the same tempo using the same (I'm pretty sure) 808 beats. They're very retro, although Fitness would never feel comfortable with me using the word retro. There is no objective understanding of music anyways, he would tell me.
Right now he's playing a show on KSPC. He's covering Show Room Dummies by Kraftwerk (WE ARE SHOW ROOM DUMMIES x 100). I'll post some photos of his performance shortly. We'll put an mp3 up too.
Speaking of mp3s of radio shows , I'll also put up a deathbypanda performance shortly. It's got some new songs no one has ever heard (except for the people who have heard it).
Fitness' set is about as minimal as art gets. Very minimal aesthetic. I can't even tell if he's blinking,

Clean Up Downtown, Yeah! 2008

Los Angeles: One Narrative
In an effort to obtain documents leading to a certain individual's entrance into the Land of the Rising Sun, it was ascertained that indeed a trip Downtown was in order. After an encounter with bureaucracy (a short lived victory), the mission began to find something to do.
Disgusted by the detritus of modern life, a cleanup effort was organized. Few participants showed, but the struggle was noted. Amid the debris, a single bullet. There was much metaphor to be found.
Post "Clean Up Downtown, Yeah! 2008", stickers were awarded. These stickers, like manna from heaven, a gift from the Scrapbook Fairy (who is usually found bumming around the New Otani Hotel). After a coffee and a smoke, we were once again ready to crusade, but alas we came upon signals of the sexualization of public spaces. However, defeated as we were, morale rose when light shone through the urban 'trees'. Unfortunately, there was no revelation. Behind the light, nothing.
So an excursion to Skid Row was arranged, a truly noble quest for intoxicant. Despite the peculiarity of flower shops open past five, yet another failure caused a huge collapse in our former zeal. Fake PD is the main contributor to this loss, however the disguise was ingenious. It smells of a new crime fighting technique (and quite a cost effective one at that).
Speaking of smells, our next location, The Smell, disappointed. A film crew accosted us with their atrociously bright light, of which all attendees made great effort to ignore. Our poster still remains Chez Smell, however its lack of 'dot com' increases not only its enigmatic state, but its obscurity. The bands were lackluster tonight. Causes for this seem to be rooted in the basis of the so called "local scene", and Burn Out City on our part. Our problem this night, despite The Smell's new wunderkind Abe Vigoda's appearance, seems to be the mass acceptance of mediocrity and incompetence that stems from current notions on noise and low-fidelity music (more to come later on this emerging story).
Despite our failure to adventure in Los Angeles, it was entertaining. The jury is still out on whether Downtown is cool/exciting enough to actually hang out there for longer than three hours, but at least from our experience the outlook is dim. However, this is the state of things in post apocalypse.

From yesterday's 88 Boadrum performance

Cool stuff i learned about the boredom's at yesterday's performance.
1. Eye uses 7 or 8 guitar necks each tuned to different chords that are mounted on drum hardware. Apparently, this guy Tsuji (who's a touring member, and chain smokes lots of tobacco) built it.
2. White staff means loud and chaotic drumming. Red=hit and stop Blue=hit and continue pattern.
3. Yoshimi's husband is an interesting and kind fellow.
4. Hella's drummer was being fawned over for hours on end by a fan volunteer.

5. This guy Hisham aka Soft Circle (above photo) organized lots of the event and speaks legit Japanese with Eye.
6. The organizers tried to have everyone wear Nikes. That was weird.
7. Tar pits smell good... Like tool sheds.
8. Some of the drummers sucked more than others, and some were show offs. Like high school band show offs--playing all these licks without any taste or nuance. But for the most part, they were good.
That's about all... following are some photos of setup, the afternoon rehearsal, and the evening performance.

on stage in the light blue shirt is tsuji, the chain smoking bad ass i mentioned in point 1. you might be able to see the guitar neck percussive instrument if you look hard enough also.

88 Boadrums!

88 Boadrums occurred yesterday, 8/8/08, at the La Brea Tarpits in Los Angeles. The event began at 8:08pm. Features included long, droney rhythms, delayed vocals (in Japanese of course), staff smashing, and 88 drummers.
Could this be The Boredoms' 'new thing'? Can we expect 99 Boadrums next year? Due to the coolness of an event like this, early data seems to suggest yes.
In other news, he has brought it and we must remix it. Goomy's Gland Balm is so good, I just had to.
